For London Design Festival 2017, we present the UK launch of new products from Muller Van Severen, e15, Giopato & Coombes and more. Show 15 explores the art of using individual design elements to define space, convey concepts and evoke feeling.
As part of London Design Festival 2017 we present 'Punctuating Space', a study of how individual design elements can convey concepts and evoke feelings through tactility, colour, light and form. In the words of our Managing Director James Mair, “We are exploring the benefits of that single piece of furniture or lighting that can make a space sing.”
The show features work by a diverse group of designers and brands, bound together by a common thread. Whether they embrace modern materials and techniques, or seek to connect us with the past; our participants draw influence from art, the natural world or everyday life, creating objects that aim to nudge behaviours and drive emotion.
Included in the show are several pieces on display for the first time in the UK, such as Giopato & Coombes' Cirque, a modern chandelier inspired by the circus trapeze. They will also preview their Gioielli Wall Lights, a direct reference and tribute to the painstaking work of the goldsmith.

From German furniture brand e15 comes 'Kazimir', Philipp Mainzer's metal framed dining table inspired by the art of Russian Suprematist, Kazimir Malevich. The legendary contemporary Italian furniture brand Arflex will display 'Leafo' a new Jaime Hayon chair that evokes the golden era of Italian design with a distinctive biomorphic twist; the chair’s form echoes the movement of a leaf falling from a tree.
Our new agency brand Valerie Objects will take over our mezzanine for the UK launch of Muller Van Severen's new collection of delicate hanging wall shelves. Hannes Van Severen equates furniture to sculpture “making prototypes by hand is essentially sculpting.” This approach is evident in the way the duo continually find unique ways to approach everyday objects. Their shelves reduce this universal form to its barest essentials, ingeniously crafting each one from a single sheet of steel, that is laser cut and then folded to create the brackets.

We are also delighted to present work by local and international emerging talent. From Norway, young designer Bjørn Van Den Berg will exhibit his 'Sheet Cabinet', an exercise in how careful choice of materials can build emotional affinity with a product. London based Child Studio will show their acclaimed light sculptures. Inspired by a quote attributed to the Italian surrealist painter Giorgio De Chirico: 'There is much more mystery in the shadow of a man walking on a sunny day, than in all religions in the world.' The result is a theatrical set of design objects whose precarious shapes are intended to create a feeling of movement and optical illusion, building a sense of anticipation and suspense.
These newly launched objects will sit alongside a carefully curated selection of work by the Bouroullec brothers, Pastoe, Astep Lighting and many more, creating an environment that celebrates the best of contemporary furniture design, and its ability to connect us emotionally and tangibly to the spaces in which we live and work.
