Behind the curatorial process: part 1

Our physical space may be temporarily closed, but we are still very much open for business. As we transition into spring we’ve begun to cast our minds ahead to the new additions we are bringing to the showroom. We wanted to share a little of the stories and inspiration behind our curatorial process and our favourite pieces of the moment.

Roomset 1 - Inspired by artist France-Lise McGurn

Our first roomset is inspired by the sense of freedom and movement expressed in the work of artist France-Lise McGurn. Vibrant washes of colour and deft, sweeping lines are echoed in the colours, textures and silhouettes of our chosen pieces.

Take for example, the Swoon Lounge Chair, designed by Space Copenhagen for Fredericia, it’s undulating curves are accentuated by use of a rich Dedar velvet. Their Adamo & Eve range is well loved by us here at Viaduct, it is super soft but also incredibly hard-wearing. Available in a wide range of colours we opted for this soft powdery blue hue, to bring both lightness and tranquility to our space.

To accompany the lounge chair we’ve chosen the Pon Table, again from Fredericia, but this time designed by Jasper Morrison. A simple design at first glance, closer inspection reveals its perfectly considered proportions, with a solid wood top, base and stem that work as an integrated whole. Pon’s modest size makes it a great alternative to the traditional coffee table for smaller spaces.

For warmth and richness we’ve selected this Vintage Rug by danish company Kvadrat in a beautiful, nuanced aubergine shade. Subtle colour variation is achieved by using several shades of yarn that are specially washed. The hand spun yarn process gives this kelim an intriguing, irregular surface.

As a storage option we’ve chosen the Noon Sideboard by our friends at Pastoe. For generations this Dutch company have crafted furniture with exquisite attention to detail and craftsmanship. The Noon is no exception, its timeless design features an unusual frame that envelops the elements within. The sleek profile requires no handles, the doors and drawers gently open when pressed. We love having this sideboard in the showroom to show our clients as it is such a versatile piece. It has almost infinite options for customisation and colour combinations which means we can always create the perfect version for any space.

In sharp contrast to the pastel and neutral hues elsewhere in this scene, we have opted for an electric blue Pivoter à Poser lamp by the legendary Charlotte Perriand. A classic from the Nemo collection, this light feels incredibly contemporary despite being designed back in the 1950’s. Perriand was an advocate of functional design, believing lighting should not be purely decorative, but rather perform a vital technical function in a room. This light is a great embodiment of her philosophy; the intriguing design utilises volets that rotate acting as two diffusers to control the levels of direct and indirect light.
