The Torii Chair has been named after Japanese word for 'bird abode', the gateway to sacred Shinto shrines, inspired by the chair's distinctive shape and traditional joinery methods.
Defined by its closely-spaced back legs and perch-like curved backrest, Torii conceals inherent sturdiness in spite of its light aesthetic.
The chair has passed Level 2 tests for commercial seating, simulating heavy use, and has been crafted with traditional exposed mortise and tenon joinery. The seat has been secured with dowels and special metal fittings, while the backrest is joined with steel dowels and epoxy glue.
The Bensen Torii Chair is offered online in black stained ash, oak or walnut finishes.
