Jaume Sans (1914–1987) was a Catalan artist and designer born in Sitges, Barcelona. After spending his childhood in Cuba, he returned to Barcelona, where he became part of the city’s vibrant avant-garde movement of the 1920s and 30s. Influenced by leading figures such as Angel Ferrant, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró, Sans was a member of the pioneering ADLAN group, which introduced new artistic ideas to Spain through groundbreaking exhibitions like Alexander Calder’s Miniature Circus and the 1936 Logicofobist Exhibition.
Initially recognised for his surrealist painting and sculpture, Sans later turned to industrial design, where he created innovative furniture and lighting. His most iconic piece, the Pie de Salón floor lamp, originally designed in the 1960s, remains a symbol of modernist elegance and is today produced by Santa & Cole. Bridging surrealism and functional design, Jaume Sans played a vital role in shaping Catalonia’s artistic and design heritage.
