Originally conceived in 1918, the chair embodies the Neoplasticist pursuit of purity, harmony, and essential form, echoing the abstract principles shared by Piet Mondrian.
Rietveld’s early prototypes used unified colours across all elements, but as his thinking evolved, constructional components were separated visually according to function: the structural base painted black, and the seat and back elevated in bold primary colours. This shift transformed the Slat Chair into the Red and Blue Chair we recognise today—an expressive composition of planes, lines, and right angles.
Cassina’s authorised reissue preserves the original proportions and philosophy, rendering one of the most influential modernist designs of the 20th century with exceptional craftsmanship.
