Emeco

makes chairs. In America. Mostly from recycled stuff. But always to last.

Emeco's story begins in 1944 when the steelworking company were hired to manufacture a chair from salvaged aluminium for the American Navy during WWII. The 'Navy Chair' as it became known was a huge success and production continued long after the conflict ended.

In the late nineties, Gregg Buchbinder took over the company and took a look at the order books. He noticed lots of European designers such as Philippe Starck and Ettore Sottsass were using the chair in their designs for hotels and restaurants. He saw the potential in this and decided to collaborate with these designers to create more chair designs.

Since then the company have worked with Sam Hecht & Kim Colin, Jasper Morrison, Naoto Fukasawa and many more. As well as collaborating with companies like Coca-Cola. The results are always exceptionally crafted furniture items made from innovative eco materials, not just the aluminium for which they are famed, but also recycled wood pulp, pet bottles and sustainably sourced cork.
